Below is a brief summary detailing my first experience with Reporting a problem in Google Maps…

On April 25th, I used the “Report a problem” tool at http://maps.google.com/ to report an obvious street label error on the Dunn Memorial Bridge in Albany, NY.

Yes, Google Maps evidently has the Dunn Memorial Bridge in Albany crossing the Hudson River from Illinois to Nebraska!

I reported the issue using Google’s “Report a problem” tool, which was fairly intuitive, but not as exciting as making an actual edit in Potlatch 2. I received an auto reply from Google confirming they received the notification and issued a Google Maps Problem ID (790F-846D-6339-B85E). So far, so good!

On April 28th, I received the following email update from Google:

Correcting a simple labeling error this obvious isn’t “easy for us to fix at this time”? Really Google… really!

Yet another reason to switch2osm!

Update (7/24/12): It looks like this issue has been resolved- though I have not received an official update from the Google team…

Hello, I can tell you love to map (genius, I know) and I suggest using Google MapMaker! It’s a lot of fun, and so much better than “report a problem”.
You’ll have to familiarize yourself with the guidelines, but the process is far more intuitive and transparent than the reporting feature. Good Luck!

Google has decided that its users of their well-liked Google Maps service will begin becoming charged a fee for utilizing their service. Websites that are going embedding a Google Map of their location will be charged a fee for usage. This new Google Maps fee is going to hit mostly the bigger companies, particularly the Travel industry. I suspect that certain websites that are the heaviest users would be websites like TripAdvisor and Expedia.*’
